The Tower of London: a Doorway To History"The Traitor's Gate"This secret, ancient gate is the rear entrance to the Tower of London, connecting the Tower directly to the River Thames. Through this very gate came dozens of enemies of English Kings, stolen through the Tower's back entrance to avoid their discovery by the general public. Mary Queen of Scots threw herself weeping on the same stairs you see in this picture, begging for an audience with the King (an audience which was not granted). Many others were stolen into the Tower this way, including the future Queen Elizabeth I. Dozens who entered the Tower through this gate never saw the outside world again, losing their heads on the chopping block. This is why it bears the name "The Traitor's Gate."
