for bike messengers & for any and all unsung heroes

gazing at the unexpected
     traffic on fourteenth street
          patiently contending with this
               problematic heat

          edging up on escalators
     buzzing fulla bugaboo
my brain contains a shelf of knicknacks
     flecked with curiosity

          pulling hepcat chains from wax
     an ineluctable thwack
folding back the layers of
     my plasticland street smarts

slinking past industrialistic
     flakes of toxic grit
          busting balls without complaint
               until nighttime air descends
          nailing coffin lids to street

so much off the dial
     a jittery disheveled loop of
          happenstance and mystery

          guess i can't escape
     this constantly malevolent
shifty-eyed demonic beat

it's fast acting
     nicking ticking
          nicking ticking
               time bomb city
