[in memory of cary gevanter,
an amazingly gifted cartoonist
whose ghost still haunts st. john's street].
gazing cross-eyed into mirror,
pancho villa swears.
miffed that he's without a scissor
to remove unwanted hairs.
between bums, conniption
fits galore below the stairs.
a business sissy tends to business
toddles by & doesn't care.
dumped into a world of trouble
in the pit of van brunt station,
persons trapped inside of bubbles
mixed up in their underwear,
endless comebacks whirling 'round
a whirling dervish street.
flinty & quixotic billboards
from a culvert dangle
where fat back room bosses tangle,
labors tend to fatten up
the pocket books of money men …
"hello and welcome to brooklyn."
found beside these hurly burly
subway rats, some weird descendants
of the katzenjammer
kids wit crazy sneers.
klunky train sounds horrible,
ripping eardrums out.
ancient brakes go "SQUEEEEEEEEAK!"
hard-boileds filter out,
inside hopeless millions
mental cauldrons full of fear …
sensing threats to life and limb
the naked truth is here,
a world of pimps & heart disorders
up above billboards glinting,
"hello and welcome to brooklyn."
bloods wit no attention span
cavalier, on duh ropes.
the gallivanting comatose.
done wit messing, coalescing
fleetfoot bimbos,
waves and waves,
trudging up from bleak train tunnels
in a toothless
mindless haze,
"hello and welcome to brooklyn."
